MMMMonday: May 22nd through 28th

This May I’m joining Zoe at ‘So, Zo…’ in a challenge to wear something handmade every day for thirty-one days. This post marks the fourth update of my progress.

May 22, 2012

What:  The Silk Paco Peralta Draped Top

Where:  To work.  There’s nothing like doing science in a silk blouse!

May 23, 2012

What:  The Gray Armani Jacket

Where:  To work and then dinner with friends.  It’s been surprisingly chilly in the San Francisco area this week.  I’ve gotten more use out of my handmade jackets than I expected this month.

May 24, 2012

What:  The Linen Knit Renfrew

Where:  To work.  I made an effort to think beyond the jeans I’ve been wearing everyday, but I still gravitated towards pants yet again.

May 25, 2012

What:  A self-silk-screened shirt:  the male warrior from the game Gauntlet in teal on a maroon T shirt

Where:  To work.  Though not handmade, this skirt is my go-to for the end of a day of hiking or a weekend of camping.  I’ve never worn it to work because it’s made of sweatshirt knit, but I enjoyed wearing it today.  I bet it would be easy to duplicate…

May 26, 2012

What:  The Mad Men Dress

Where:  To a game night with friends.  A wild night of Bananagrams.  I found myself spelling sewing-related words surprisingly often.

May 27, 2012

What:  The Paint Me a Maxi Dress

Where:  To dinner with friends.  I love this dress but haven’t been motivated to wear it because of the chill in the air.  I decided to try it with my long cardigan today.

May 28, 2012

What:  A self-silk-screened shirt:  ”The Unnaturals” with a frog in black on a green ringer T shirt

Where:  To work.  On Memorial Day.  So I decided it was okay to have another insanely casual day at work.  I’m practically in running clothes!

  1. What kind of camera do you have Amy? Your photos always look so great (which i’m sure is largely due to skill, and only minorly due to the camera)

    1. I actually think a lot has to do with the camera! Well, at least with the lens. I have a Canon 5D Mark II, and I use a 50 mm lens with the aperture set to f/2.8 so that I’m in focus but the background isn’t. I try to take my photos in the morning or evening when the light is nice, and I avoid artificial light as best as I can. I also like messing around with a set of free Photoshop filters I got while back. My favorite these days really makes the colors pop. Sometimes a bit too much, but I’ve learned how to tone it down a bit with trial and error.

  2. I’ve been lurking for a number of posts now, but I’m breaking my silence to say that’s an incredibly nice jacket! The Grey Armani, I mean (sorry, I’m Canadian so I don’t spell it ‘gray’); love the print, the collar, that asymmetrical front, all of it.

    1. Thanks! And, no worries about the grey vs. gray. I can never remember how I’m supposed to spell it, but my fingers always type gray. This jacket was actually my first real garment sewing experience. My mother-in-law gave me the fabric, pattern, and buttons for my birthday, and I slowly worked on the coat during the fall and winter of 2010-2011. I’m so thankful she started me off with a nice pairing of fabric and pattern from day one!

  3. I’ve been lurking for a number of posts now also and I’m breaking my silence to ask if you could you do a tout on your screen printing in the near future as yours look really good

    1. Hi Mary! When I was a grad student, I had access to my school’s screen printing room. It was awesome as it had an endless supply of screens, light sensitive material, fabric paints, and T shirts. It would be hard to replicate for the home crafter. But, the next time I make it back down there, I’ll try to take lots of pictures and post a tutorial anyway. In the meantime, maybe I’ll research how to do something similar at home.

  4. Hi Amy, Thanks for your reply, my daughter is giving stencilling a go. She does in on cardboard then fabric paint but her lines are thick where yours are really fine so hence the interest.
