This year I had time to make two Christmas presents for my family. The first was this scarf for my sister-in-law that was actually made entirely in one evening at my last ever sewing class at Eddie’s Quilting Bee. My three years of free sewing classes that came with the purchase of my sewing machine are now at an end. But, while I enjoyed my teacher, all of my classmates, and the crafty projects assigned every month, I am a bit relieved to be able to focus solely on my own projects right now. My own sewing list is already long enough!
This scarf is actually five layers of a beautiful red flannel with a subtle navy and light blue stripe running through it. All five layers were quilted together by stitching parallel rows of stitches half an inch apart using a walking foot. I then cut the top two and bottom two layers of flannel between each row of stitching, leaving the middle layer of fabric intact. After class, the scarf looked like this…
After a trip through the washer and dryer, it fluffed up to look like this…
Faux chenille, perhaps? I like that the blue lines became mere speckles of blue in a deep sea of red.
Merry Christmas, dear sister-in-law! I hope you find that this scarf is as warm as it looks.
Oh, that is beautiful, Amy! 2012 has been good to you! Happy New Year!!
What a cool gift! I’m sure your sister-in-law is going to love it!
Lovely – your own personal chenille fabric! The washing and drying certainly makes the difference!
That is a great gift! I’m going to have to copy this idea!
So great! I want one… did you cut the layers on the bias?
Yes, I did. I also had to piece them together to get the length of scarf I wanted.
This is unbelievable!!! I love how elegant and WARM it looks!
Wow! I can’t believe how simple it is to make something that looks so elegant! What a thoughtful gift!
Hey this is lovely and isn’t it cool how the washer and dryer fluffed it all up. I guess the effect would be different depending on the fabric used too, to a point.
Happy New Year to you :O)
So simple, but perfectly cozy and elegant! Thanks for sharing the method you used to make this faux chenille!
It looks lovely, such a cool idea! I bet your sister-in-law was thrilled!
Happy New Year!
