What an adventure! I sacrificed two needles and two needle threaders to the completion of the sleeping quilt. It’s done though, and here it is in all of its glory.
As my husband and I tried to awkwardly exhibit the sleeping bag in our tiny living room, I couldn’t help but laugh. The sleeping bag looked like a giant fish that was swallowing him alive – while he was smiling and looking like it was no big thing!
Now to the details of the quilt design. That line going across the middle of the quilt is a separating zipper. This feature enables the quilt to split in two, which makes for much less weight and bulk when divided between our two backpacks than a traditional sleeping bag. The top half of the quilt lays flat like a blanket, so we will need to rely on our sleeping pads to keep us off the floor of our tent. The bottom half is sewn into a pocket for our feet. There are other special features, but I’ll let you go to the creator’s site to read more about them if you’re interested.
We’re car camping with friends this weekend, and we’re really excited to try out this quilt with the convenience of a car nearby. As a precaution, we’re going to bring our traditional sleeping bags just in case we wake up in the middle of the night freezing or uncomfortable and realize that this quilt system just doesn’t work for us.
Also, the next time I quilt something with yarn, I’ll try this trick instead of breaking more needle threaders.
