Circle Skirt Sew-Along: Pinning the Hem

This September I’m sewing along with Casey at Elegant Musings. A bunch of talented seamsters and I are all making circle skirts, and here’s a reflection on my efforts to sew well.

Pins are now marking a straight hem around the six yards of fabric that make up the bottom of my circle skirt thanks in great part to my husband and this little ruler.  I’m definitely baby stepping my way through the making of this skirt, more slow than steady.  I need to get a move on if I want it to attend Casey’s Circle Skirt Sew-Along Party on Friday!

  1. Hi! I’ve only just got my hem pin marked too, with the help of my sister. I’d love to go to Casey’s party too, so I guess tonight is horse hair braid and then a lot of hand stitching! Good luck in getting yours finished. x

    1. I stitched up the hem last night. I was going to go the hand-stitched route, but then I realized I’d never be able to finish by Friday if I did. So, machine stitch it was. My fabric is more casual, so I think the stitch line fits in just fine. I added horsehair braid as well, and I can’t believe how much it changed the drape of the skirt! I had no idea until after everything was all stitched up! It’s going to take some adjusting to – it’s very 50s sock hop now!

  2. I need to rig myself one of those, as begging my mom to drive 2.5 hrs to help me mark a hem isn’t exactly feasible (though it did work once!). I can’t wait to see the finished skirt! No time for the actual sew-along, but I’ve sort of been following the progress. A circle skirt is definitely on my to-sew list.

Silly question: do you pull the skirt out, then mark, or let it all hang naturally? There is so much volume, so it must take ages.
