Sundays with Sandra: Tummy and Waist Alterations

This winter I’m sewing along with Sandra Betzina. A bunch of other talented seamsters and I have joined up to learn pant fitting techniques using Sanda Betzina’s Pant Fitting Techniques class on Craftsy. Here’s a reflection on my efforts to sew well.

I feel a little ADD over here jumping from Drape Drape 2 to peplum to pants, but here we are – another week, another Craftsy class on Pant Fitting Techniques with Sandra Betzina.  This week Sandra focused on tummy and waist alterations.  Though she showed a few test garments, the class was still focused on altering the paper pattern.  She very much believes that one should put more work in up front so everything will go smoothly once the fabric is cut.  This week’s take home for me was the value in getting the high hip measurement correct.    I learned that if I want to make a nice fitting pair of pants, I really should know my high hip measurement, how far down it falls from my waist, and what that means for my pants pattern.  I won’t give Sandra’s techniques away, but I will say that my pattern paper is covered with a ton of colored pencil at this point!

As a reminder, I received this class for free from Craftsy in return for an honest review.  If you’re interested in taking this class yourself, follow this link for 40% off Sandra Betzina’s Pant Fitting Techniques.

  1. I signed up for the Pant Fitting class through one of your links –
    and I am Loving It…!!!
    🙂 thank you

Sandra Betzina is so warm & knowledgeable –
I’ll be replaying the class several times and will be making several pants from the supplied pattern along with the videos. It will take me quite a while to absorb all that knowledge.

  2. Sounds like I’d really learn a lot from this. I made a chart of all my height proportions (where my waist and high hip, etc are) over the summer so that I can mark all these on patterns and stop guessing. Your peplum outfit is so pretty, btw! Can’t wait to see.
