Ever since the end of Sandra Betzina’s Pant Fitting Technique class, I’ve been itching to start another class. What can I say? I enjoy the Craftsy platform. I’ve decided that the next class I want to take is one I purchased just a smidgen over a year ago: Kenneth D. King’s Jean-ius class on Craftsy. This class has been a long time coming. You see, after I’d had the class for a couple of weeks and watched most of the videos, I promised my good friend that I’d copy her one pair of fancy pants designer jeans for her. She’s 4’10”, and a good fitting pair of jeans are hard to come by. She can’t just hem longer jeans since the knees end up too low. She actually had to special order her one pair and still have them hemmed. But, after my generous offer, I dragged my feet throughout the year because most of the woven garments I’d sewn for other people ended up not fitting quite right despite my best efforts. Could I really make someone else pants?! It slowly dawned on me that I had to at least try since I wasn’t going to get better at fitting someone else if I didn’t work at it. So, a few months back I picked up some nice denim from Mood hoping that it would spur me on. And, here I am, finally committing myself to start.
Because my last class was such a smashing success, Craftsy has been generous enough to offer you guys 40% off this class if you want to follow along with me. Or, not. Since the class will never expire, you can take it any time you want. Just follow this link for your discount: Jean-ius: Reverse Engineer Your Favorite Fit with Kenneth D. King.
The class is divided into eleven video lessons:
- Introduction
- Preparing the Model Fit
- Creating the Draft
- Testing the Draft
- Correcting the Draft
- Draft to Pattern
- Back Pockets and Yoke
- Front Pockets
- Front Fly and Zipper
- Final Assembly
- Finishing Details
Just as last time, I’ll aim to complete one class a week. This week was the Introduction. After covering his background in sewing (he started at the age of four!), Kenneth explained the power of being able to take any fabric you want and turn it into a unique pair of jeans. He showed off several pairs that he’d made from the same pattern, each of which looked so very different because of the fabric choice. Though I’m going to be using a traditional navy denim for the pair I’m making my friend, I’ve already been inspired to come up with ideas for some more outrageous pairs for myself later this year. Now to find the time…

I adore Kenneth King’s Clone Your Favorite Garment class. I should say I A D O R E Kenneth King’s Clone Your Favorite Garment class. Have fun!
You rocked that class! That was hosted by Pattern Review, wasn’t it? I’ve yet to take one of their online classes. I wonder how they compare…
Hm, I’ve been on the fence about this one, but the 40% off might push me over. The class looks fantastic and I am looking forward to seeing what you do!
I really enjoyed it last year when I first watched the videos. Hopefully it’ll be just as fun to actually go through the class!
I have already purchaed this class, and am planning on making a pair for my boyfriend. I bought the denim and all the notions/tools but have yet to start. I’d love to follow along with you. It will be great motivation for me, and my boyfriend will thank you as well. 🙂
Happy Sewing,
Shelley
Oh! Let me know if you do start! It would be fun to sew along with someone!
I also purchased this class a little under a year ago and still haven’t started it yet! I am excited to watch your progress, but I may have to just watch since I have other things already on my to-do list. Good luck!
Isn’t that always the case? There’s always so much I want to be doing and so many things I want to be making!
I took this class and LOVED it. He is such a wonderful teacher. I’ve watched the video several times and made a pair of beautiful velvet jeans. I was amazed at well it worked. Run don’t walk to take this class
From what I remember when I watched the videos last year, it was a great class! I’m excited to finally go through it!
This is actually the one Craftsy class that I’ve managed to complete so far, and it’s fabulous. I love the resulting pair of jeans, and can’t wait to make more!
Yay! I’m so excited! I hope I feel the same way!
