The fabulous people at Laurence King Publishing have recently put another great book out there for sewing and fashion enthusiasts: Fashion A-Z: An Illustrated Dictionary.
It’s a cute mini book that’s perfect for even the smallest of sewing spaces.
Ever wonder why someone’s use of ‘jumper’ on their blog didn’t fit your idea of what the word meant? Well, it turns out ‘jumper’ can mean any of three things:
(1) A US term for a sleeveless dress worn by women and children, more fully called a ‘jumper dress,’ and made in various different styles. (2) A British term for a pullover sweater. (3) A 19th c. term for a loose-fitting, hip-length jacket, often featuring a hood, and worn by soldiers.
For the never-knitters, ever wondered what exactly ‘gauge’ means in knitting?
In knitting, gauge is the number of stitches per unit measurement of knitted fabric. This may correspond to the length or width of the fabric, and is usually expressed per inch, although increasingly given in metric units. Gauge is affected by the yarn, knitting needles, and type of stitch used, as well as the tension imparted by the knitter. Knowing the gauge ensures that the finished knitted piece will be the desired size.
And, there’s plenty more where that came from. In fact, there’s over 2,000 entries in total! Care to take a peek?
A typical page layout with its cute little illustrations. (Click to embiggen.)
A bit of what ‘K’ has to offer.
Even the letters introducing each section are appropriately illustrated!
This dictionary covers stitches and fabrics, shoes and hats, garments and accessories, and more. It delves into culture and history as well. If you like being in the know and having everything in one place, I’d definitely recommend checking this little book out.
Now for the best part – the giveaway. Laurence King Publishing has agreed to give away an additional copy of Fashion A-Z: An Illustrated Dictionary to one of my readers. If you’d like to be entered into the drawing, just leave a comment below letting me know. I’ll pick a winner at random next Wednesday, June 19th at 7 am PDT. Good luck!
