Wednesdays with Lynda: Muslin Test Garment

The next few months I’m sewing along with Lynda Maynard. A bunch of other talented seamsters and I have joined up to learn how to fit using Lynda Maynard’s Sew the Perfect Fit class on Craftsy. Here’s a reflection on my efforts to sew well.

Ignore the lack of pressing, and instead focus on the many thread-traced grain lines and cross-grain lines.  (I was in a hurry trying to get this class completed this week, and I promise to press all the seams open before next week’s class!)  From what I’ve gathered so far, these lines will be key to getting the perfect fit.  Hopefully I’ve gotten them close to the right spots… Though, now that I look at my muslin test garment on my dress form, I think the high hip line look awfully high.  It was supposed to be three inches down from the waist line, but it’s looking like I only gave it an inch or so!  I guess the good news is that everything is just basted together, so I can easily go back in and add additional thread traced cross-grain lines where needed.  Extra lines shouldn’t matter.  In fact, I already have an extra line.  When I was marking my sleeve cross-grain lines, I forgot that Lynda said the lower cross-grain line already marked on the pattern wasn’t needed.  I remembered after the stitching was already in place, so it will stay!

This week Lynda began by walking us through marking the grain lines, cross-grain lines, darts, etc. on our muslins.  She had a lot of good pointers that I hopefully absorbed through both the process of sewing and the current reflection that I’m doing while writing this post.  Thread tracing and stay stitching were followed by sewing together the bodice, skirt, and sleeves.  All in all it was a fairly short lesson.  Excitingly, we’re now almost ready to get started fitting!  Next week we’re learning about fitting standards. Can’t wait!

As a reminder, I received this class for free from Craftsy in return for an honest review. If you’re interested in taking this class yourself, follow this link for 40% off Lynda Maynard’s Sew the Perfect Fit.

    1. Oh! I’ve watched all the lessons in Susan’s couture sewing class, but I haven’t gone through the process of actually making the dress yet. I’m hoping this class will help me make sure I correctly fit the garment when I finally get to that class! Have fun!

    1. She just had us mark cross-grain lines above and below the bust, at the high hip, and at the full hip line. It didn’t seem to matter much where you put the grain lines. You thread trace the lines before stitching any of the darts. The high hip and under bust cross-grain line cut through the darts. If the relationship between the lines and the darts comes up in future classes, I’ll make sure to mention it here!

  1. Your muslin looks great. I just completed mine and noticed some flaws. I may find when it comes time for the fitting I have to redo something if I haven’t already before then.
